Narcos Costume Tips & FAQs

Step into the dangerous and captivating world of “Narcos,” a series that delves deep into the history of drug cartels in Colombia and the relentless battle waged by law enforcement to bring them down. This FAQ section is designed for fans who wish to embody the complex characters from this gritty drama, from the ambitious and ruthless Pablo Escobar to the determined DEA agents Steve Murphy and Javier Peña. Whether you’re preparing for a cosplay event, a themed party, or simply celebrating your love for this intense and historically rooted series, we’ll guide you through creating costumes that capture the essence of “Narcos'” iconic figures.

To cosplay as Pablo Escobar, focus on his casual yet commanding appearance. Opt for a classic 1980s Colombian look with a light-colored button-up shirt, often left slightly open at the collar, and denim or khaki pants. Escobar’s signature mustache is a must-have, neatly trimmed to match his iconic look. Adding a fake gold watch and a stack of prop money can enhance the authenticity. Embodying Escobar’s mix of charm and menace, with a relaxed posture and intense gaze, will bring depth to your portrayal.

For a Steve Murphy costume, aim for a classic 1980s DEA agent look. This includes a light blue or white button-down shirt, a brown leather jacket, and jeans or slacks. Accessories like aviator sunglasses and a fake badge or ID will complement the outfit. Steve often narrates the series with a reflective and determined tone, so adopting a serious demeanor and a no-nonsense attitude towards crime fighting will enhance your portrayal.

To cosplay as Javier Peña, incorporate his slightly more rugged and relaxed style compared to his DEA partner. Wear a dark polo or button-down shirt, denim jeans, and a leather jacket or a vest. Javier’s distinctive mustache and loose, wavy hair contribute to his signature look. Carrying a prop gun in a holster and adopting Peña’s confident yet weary demeanor, shaped by his experiences in Colombia, will make for a convincing representation.

Costumes for other cartel members can include casual shirts, often with bold prints or colors, paired with jeans and boots or sneakers. Accessories like gold chains, rings, and a prop gun can signify their affiliation with the drug trade. For additional law enforcement characters, maintain a professional appearance with button-down shirts, slacks, and practical shoes, along with badges or prop firearms to signify their authority. Regardless of the side they’re on, capturing the tension and gravity of their roles in the narcotics battle will add realism to your costume.

Including memorable quotes from “Narcos” can add depth and authenticity to your costume or themed interactions. Here are a few iconic lines:

“Plata o plomo?” – Pablo Escobar, offering a choice between accepting bribe money or facing bullets

“Sometimes I think we’re the same, buchónes like you and agents like me. We’re just on opposite sides of the law.” – Javier Peña

“All empires are built of blood and fire.” – Pablo Escobar

“The bad guys need to get lucky every time. The good guys just need to get lucky once.” – Steve Murphy

“In war, you can do things halfway and lose, or you can do it right and win.” – Javier Peña

Choose quotes that resonate with your chosen character and practice delivering them with the appropriate intensity and context for a truly immersive experience.

About Narcos

Narcos follows the life of notorious drug kingpin Pablo Escobar as he becomes a billionaire through the production and distribution of cocaine. The first season begins in Chile with Mateo Moreno, aka “Cockroach” as his drug cartel gets discovered by the Chilean Armed Forces, killing everyone except him, surprisingly. Eventually meeting Pablo Escobar, Cockroach begins to worry that Escobar’s cocaine business is going to affect his profits. Feeling threatened, Cockroach leaks Escobar’s smuggling routes to the drug agency agents, resulting in Pablo Escobar’s arrest.

From that point in the series, the crime and drama only heighten. From putting out orders for the death of Cockroach to his allies to evading the DEA, Narcos follows the drug-fueled lives of those involved in some of the most notorious cartels in the world. Eventually, Narcos showcases the events following the fall of Pablo Escobar and even introduces other drug cartels in Mexico in season four.
