With her original debut in 1947 by creators Robert Kaningher and Carmine Infantino, Black Canary is a vigilante in Starling City with a secret identity. Taking on the persona of Black Canary at night, during the day she is attorney Laurel Lance, AKA Oliver’s ex-girlfriend. Eventually, Laurel finds out that Oliver is The Arrow and that her sister, Sara, is also a vigilante called “The Canary,” and witnesses the death of Sara. Trying to avenge her sister’s death, Laurel takes on the persona of Black Canary and joins Oliver’s team of vigilantes. With her side-handle baton in hand, Laurel is prepared to take down her sister’s killers and help save Starling City.

Oliver hides his true intentions for returning to Starling City, and while he keeps up appearances by day, he adopts a secret persona at night, turning into archer-vigilante, Green Arrow.
Oliver’s quest for revenge is revealed by introducing “the list.” A list of names given to Oliver by his father, and the names Oliver will use to avenge his father’s death and save Starling City. After encountering many villains like Merlyn and Deathstroke, Oliver’s original intentions continue to change throughout the various seasons. Arrow’s storyline eventually leads to many Arrow crossovers with other DC characters like The Flash and Supergirl.
