How to Make a Split Pea Costume

This Split Pea costume makes the wordplay visible: two people each wear one half of the same large green pea, so the vegetable is literally split between them.

Person A wears the left half-circle and Person B wears the right half-circle over matching deep-forest shirts. Standing shoulder to shoulder, the panels reunite into one round pea with a clean center seam.

Materials for the Split Pea Duo

From the Kit

The Emerald Felt Sheet covers both halves of one pea. The Green T-Shirt Pair supplies one shirt per person, and Tacky Craft Glue bonds the felt to the cardboard. Choose shirt sizes for both wearers; a two-pack may contain two shirts in the same size.

From Home

Gather a clean cardboard panel large enough for a 30-inch circle, four sturdy 1-inch-wide ribbon lengths about 36 inches each, scissors, a pencil, string, a tape measure, a glue-spreading brush, a stapler, and spare cardboard for reinforcing tabs. Wear your own jeans and comfortable shoes. Start with longer ribbon if needed and trim only after fitting.

Back the felt with cardboard

The 1.6mm felt is a soft surface layer, so glue each half to a matching cardboard panel before wearing it. Let the bond dry fully under a flat weight.

Keep the center seam clean

Mark the back of each panel Left or Right before covering it. Keep the inner edges straight, and adjust each wearer’s shoulder loops independently so the two halves meet at the same height.

Choose Roles

Role 1

Person A — Left Half

Wear the left half-circle panel with its straight edge facing inward toward the partner.

Role 2

Person B — Right Half

Wear the right half-circle panel with its straight edge facing inward toward the partner.

Build the Two-Half Pea

Build one shared shape in four stages: cut one circle, make two rigid felt-covered panels, fit one panel to each wearer, and reunite the center seam.

Cut one shared pea circle

Draw a 30-inch circle on the cardboard, using a 15-inch piece of string between a fixed center point and your pencil as a compass. Draw a diameter through its center, then cut the circle and divide it into two matching semicircles. Scale the circle down if the panels would restrict either wearer’s arms.

Place the two cardboard halves on the 36-inch felt sheet before cutting. Trace each separately with about an inch of extra felt around every edge for folding over the back. Keep both pieces facing the same way so the fabric’s color and surface match.

Check: The two halves have matching curved edges and clean straight inner edges.

Bond felt to the backings

Spread a thin, even layer of Tacky Craft Glue over a cardboard face with the brush. Lower its felt piece onto the glue, leaving the allowance around the edge, and smooth from the center outward. Repeat for the other half.

Fold the extra felt over the cardboard edges and glue it to the back. Make small relief cuts in the allowance around the curve so it folds smoothly, stopping short of the front face. Keep the straight inner edge crisp. Weight the panels flat and follow the glue label’s drying directions before adding straps.

Check: Both felt faces are firmly bonded to rigid cardboard with no loose corners.

Add the two shoulder straps

Each wearer needs two ribbon shoulder loops, one near each side of their panel. Position the ends on the cardboard back so each loop runs over a shoulder and under that arm like a backpack strap. Test the length while the wearer holds the panel in front of their shirt; keep the ribbon clear of the neck.

Sandwich each ribbon end under a small cardboard reinforcing tab. Glue the tabs in place, add staples through the tab, ribbon and backing, and cover the closed staple ends so they cannot scratch. Let the glue dry fully. Put on the panels and adjust the loops until both straight edges hang upright at the same height.

Check: Both panels have two secure shoulder loops, with no strap pressing on the neck and no exposed staple ends.

Join the pea for the reveal

Person A wears the left half and Person B the right, with the straight edges facing one another. Stand side by side and bring those edges close enough to form a round pea. If one half sits higher, shorten or lengthen that wearer’s shoulder loops before taking a photo.

Step apart to reveal the split, then come together again for the punchline. The halves stay independent, so either person can move away or take off their panel. Practice walking through doorways separately and lift the panels off before sitting if the cardboard catches at your knees.

Check: The pair forms one shared pea with a straight center seam and no extra shape between them.

Quick Fixes

Panel feels floppy

Add a full cardboard backing before wearing it; thin felt alone cannot hold a 30-inch semicircle.

Felt lifts at the edge

Apply glue to the cardboard, smooth the felt from the straight edge outward, and weight it until fully dry.

Ribbon pulls the panel sideways

Reposition or shorten the ribbon so it sits evenly over the shoulders and leaves the straight edge facing inward.

The joke reads as two peas

Move the wearers closer and align the straight center edges so the pair becomes one round pea.

Split Pea Cosplay Costumes

Two matching green halves make this a costume that works best with a partner. Stand together for the whole pea, then step apart to show the split. Plain shirts and an uncluttered front keep the shape readable.

After the party, store the dry panels flat and keep the ribbon loops with them. For more costumes built around wordplay, explore the Pun costume ideas on our Pinterest board.

Split Pea Costume FAQs

Questions about making the two halves?

Person A wears the left half-circle panel, and Person B wears the right half-circle panel. Keep those roles consistent so the straight edges meet correctly.

No. It is one shared pea shape divided into two matching panels. The costume reads correctly when both wearers stand together.

Two ribbon loops on the back of each cardboard panel go over the wearer’s shoulders and under their arms. Reinforced tabs secure the ribbon ends to the cardboard. The green shirts are worn underneath, without glue or adhesive fasteners.

Yes. Slip your arms out of the ribbon loops to remove the panel. Keep the two halves independent; there is no fastener joining the wearers together.

Stand shoulder to shoulder with Person A on the left and Person B on the right. Align the straight edges so they create one clear split down the pea.

About Split Pea

A split pea is a dried pea divided into halves, familiar as an ingredient in split pea soup. This costume turns that everyday name into a visual joke by dividing one oversized green pea between two people. The straight edges are essential: two complete circles would suggest two peas rather than a split pea.

This version is a duo costume with a shared shape, not a pea pod filled with several peas or a letter P cut in half. The matching color connects the two wearers, while their movement supplies the joke. They can reunite as one pea for a photo or separate to make the word “split” visible.
