How to Make a Spelling Bee Costume
A bee dressed as a spelling champion makes this pun easy to spot. The black-and-yellow outfit supplies the bee, while a white sash reading SPELLING CHAMP and a dictionary supply the spelling-contest role.
Start with the striped tunic, gray wings and black pompom antennae, then add black leggings and flat shoes from home. Decorate the blank sash with small wooden letter tiles and wear it across the chest with both words facing outward.

Materials for the Spelling Bee contestant
From the Kit
Use the bee costume set and blank white sash as the outfit. Arrange wooden letter tiles to spell SPELLING CHAMP, attach them with tacky glue, and carry the dictionary to finish the contestant look.
From Home
Add black leggings and comfortable black flats. Protect the table with scrap cardboard, and keep a dark marker handy in case you need to write a missing letter on the blank back of a spare tile.
Lay out both words first
Select S P E L L I N G and C H A M P: thirteen tiles, including two Ls and two Ps. Check the actual pack before gluing, then space the tiles along the sash with a clear gap between the words.
Test the satin first
Use one spare tile and a small dot of glue on an inconspicuous part of the sash. Follow the bottle directions, then gently flex the fabric to check the hold. Keep the decorated sash flat while the glue sets.
Make the Spelling Champ sash
Arrange the lettering while the sash is flat, attach it off the body, and let the glue set before dressing. Keep the two words readable from shoulder to hip.

Arrange SPELLING CHAMP on the sash
Lay the blank white sash on a protected table. Set out the thirteen tiles in order: S P E L L I N G, then C H A M P. Leave a small gap between the words.
Use the visible front length of the sash, leaving room at the shoulder and hip. Check the spelling and spacing before applying glue.
Check: All thirteen letters read SPELLING CHAMP in order and fit on the visible front of the sash.

Glue the tiles off the body
Apply a small dot of tacky glue to the back of each tile, then press it into its planned place on the flat sash. Work through SPELLING first, leave the word gap, and add CHAMP.
Test one spare tile on an inconspicuous area first. Follow the glue label for drying, leave the sash flat while it sets, and check the hold before wearing it.
Check: Each letter is attached in the planned order, and no tile shifts when the sash is gently inspected after the label-directed drying period.

Put on the bee costume and sash
Put on the sleeveless black-and-yellow horizontally striped Bumblebee Costume Set with its gathered hem, gray translucent wings, and black pompom antenna headband. Add black leggings and black flat shoes from home.
Place the finished white sash diagonally across the chest so the wooden row faces outward and remains visible. Adjust the sash without pulling across the tiles, then check that the bee cues and spelling cue can be seen together.
Check: The stripes, wings and antennae are visible, and the sash clearly reads SPELLING CHAMP.

Carry the dictionary like a champion
Hold the dictionary beside the sash so the lettering stays visible. Keep your other hand free, and stand proudly as though you have just won the contest.
For a photo, turn slightly so the wings show while keeping both words facing the camera. The bee outfit, champion sash and dictionary are all the joke needs.
Check: The dictionary and SPELLING CHAMP sash can be seen together without covering the bee outfit.
Quick Fixes
The lettering runs out of room
Before gluing, reduce the gaps between tiles and use more of the visible sash length. Keep one slightly larger gap between SPELLING and CHAMP so the phrase is easy to read.
A letter is missing
Turn a spare tile over and write the missing letter on its blank back with a dark marker. Check both words before attaching any tiles; the pack does not guarantee a custom phrase.
Let Your Bee Do the Spelling
Give your spelling champion a proud victory pose, with the dictionary beside the sash and the wings visible. Take a full-length photo to show the bee outfit, then a closer shot where SPELLING CHAMP is easy to read.
For a group, invite friends to dress as fellow bees or have someone play the judge with a clipboard from home. Ask them to give you a word to spell, or take a mock winner photo together.

About Spelling Bee
Spelling Bee turns a spelling competition into a wearable pun: a bee becomes the champion. The sash simply says SPELLING CHAMP, so the costume makes sense without explaining a second joke.
Black-and-yellow stripes, wings and antennae establish the bee. The white sash and dictionary add the competition theme, while ordinary black leggings and flat shoes keep the outfit easy to wear.
