I drew my inspiration from a page I had colored in a coloring book titled “La Dia de la Muerte” (“The Day of the Dead”). Upon it’s completion, I decided to make my Halloween costume based on the outcome. A good friend of mine wanted me to make her a matching one, which I did. I bought 3 yards each of royal purple crushed velvet and light mint green poly/knit, 1 1/2 yards of black tulle with rainbow glitter, thread to match, 3/4 yard buckram (for the hats), black feathers and black and purple spiders (also for the hats), two blond wigs (one straight and one curly), Orange, black, purple and green Apple Barrel craft paints, black gloves, two silver with purple rhinestone spider rings, silver spider earrings, and orange, purple and green skull necklaces. I colored both wigs- for the orange wig, I used orange Apple Barrel paint, hair conditioner and water mixed well in a spray bottle, then used a paintbrush to paint black “tiger stripes” on it. For the blond wig, I used a paintbrush and painted purple, orange, green and black “tiger stripes.” Our faces were painted with the same Apple Barrel craft paints, as well, and we wore black knee-high boots. The other costume was worn by Ginger Greenleaf.
