I have wanted to make this costume for about 3 years and finally had the time to invest into it as I knew it would for sure be time consuming! I am a huge Game of Thrones fan and have always wanted to be Daenerys but I didn’t just want a basic costume – I wanted her to ride the dragon. Sure, I could have glued a plastic one to my shoulder and bought her jacket, but I decided to go big or go home. This costume took me about 3 months to make start to finish. I started the frame for the dragon from chicken wire and PVC. The PVC was the skeleton, if you will, and the wire gave the skeleton shape. Once I got it stable I attached the straps to lift it up, which are worn like suspenders. The head took me the longest with all the details. I made the whole thing from cardboard, paper, and some plaster strips to finish it up. Next was the paint where I layered fishnet material over it to make it look like scales. Once the head was complete, I used vinyl reptile print fabric to cover the body. I utilized a heck of a lot of zip ties to hold all the pieces together! The feet were the last thing I made from spray insulation foam and regular foam over some boots. The wings were PVC and fabric as well. The costume is 3 pieces to assemble all together and I usually need to borrow extra people to help me get situated. The only thing store bought was Daenerys and Jon’s coats and the two wigs. Everything else was made by hand or added on to make it that much better. I styled her entire wig myself, hand braiding and pinning them where I wanted for her Season 7 look. This was the most challenging costume I have ever created, and the biggest. But I am absolutely in love with it, and it’s exactly how I imagined it to look. My boyfriend and I took these costumes out this weekend for the first time and had some amazing feedback. People were amazed by the size of the dragon, they loved the lights I ran up the neck to look like fire – they asked to pet the dragon and if they could repost photos to social media. We both felt like celebrities all night! Just everything about it had our photo being taken non stop like we were on the red carpet. I was so happy I pulled this off successfully, and that it was functional to get around and move in.
