Vignette Stonemoss experienced tragedy after the Pact invaded her homeland of Tirnanoc, destroyed her home, and killed her family. Aiming to wipe out her species, the Pact will stop at nothing until Vignette and the faeries of Tirnanoc are completely eradicated. During the war, Vignette fell in love with Rycroft Philostrate, also known as Philo. Unfortunately, she believes he was killed in the war and she fled her homeland to go live in The Burgue among faeries and humans. 

While living in the Burgue, Vignette discovers that Philo is alive. However, Vignette joins the Black Ravens, a group of faeries who aim to keep the faerie species alive and well, so Vignette must prove that she will serve her species alone. Eventually, Vignette struggles with her loyalty to her kind as she finds herself in forbidden love with a human.
