She is deemed a “freak” because of the way she looks and has come to feel ashamed of it. Naturally, this would only lower her self-esteem and cause her to feel unwanted and unloved.
When Barnum finds her, she’s in a laundry room hiding from prying eyes. Barnum invites her to come to sing for his show, and she agrees. Lettie is a little nervous at first to sing in front of everyone, with having been ridiculed her whole life, but does it anyway. People are so amazed by her strong vocals and beautiful singing that she gets a standing ovation. Although Lettie likes the recognition for her talents, she soon learns that the only person she needs approval from is herself.
