Though Shy Ronnie comes off as incredibly shy and awkward, he seems to come out of his shell as soon as Rihanna leaves the room. Shy Ronnie Costume Tips & FAQs

Enter the quirky and comedic world of Shy Ronnie from the “Saturday Night Live” sketches with our informative costume guide FAQ. Get ready to channel the awkward yet endearing character, as we dive into the essentials for recreating Shy Ronnie’s unique and humorous style, answering your questions about crafting this iconic look.

Shy Ronnie's outfit is characterized by its understated and somewhat disheveled appearance. Essential components include a plain, button-up shirt, often in a muted color, and a pair of simple, ill-fitting trousers. His look is completed with a messy, unkempt wig if your hair doesn't naturally resemble Ronnie's frizzy, reddish style.

Shy Ronnie's hair is notably frizzy and slightly wild. If using a wig, opt for one that's a bit tousled and unkempt in appearance, preferably in a reddish or light brown color. The key is to give off a slightly disorganized and awkward vibe, matching his shy and nervous character.

For footwear, choose simple, unremarkable shoes like basic loafers or lace-up shoes. Shy Ronnie's character isn't known for flashy accessories, so keep it minimal. A pair of basic glasses or a tie worn loosely around the neck could add to the nerdy and shy character portrayal.

To accurately portray Shy Ronnie, focus on embodying his timid and awkward mannerisms. Hesitant speech, avoiding eye contact, and fidgeting can help convey his character. Shy Ronnie is known for his sudden bursts of confidence when rapping, so switching between a timid demeanor and a confident rap persona is key to nailing the character.

While Shy Ronnie is more known for his actions and mannerisms than his words, incorporating lines from his raps can add a humorous touch to your costume. You might use: "Hi, Rihanna!," [mumbled, inaudible speech] and "Suddenly rapping confidently: "Ronnie mother****** and I'm back from the dead," These lines, especially when combined with the sudden shift from mumbling to confident rapping, capture the essence of Shy Ronnie's character and can make your portrayal more entertaining and authentic.

About Shy Ronnie

After the debut of Shy Ronnie on Saturday Night Live in 2009, the hilarious SNL skit became nominated for an Emmy in 2010 for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics. Written by Rick and Monique Hines, the Rihanna and Shy Ronnie skit features The Lonely Island’s Andy Samberg and, of course, the iconic artist Rihanna. As the two are performing in front of a classroom of elementary students, Andy Samberg plays the part of Shy Ronnie, a bashful musician who has trouble speaking up when it’s his turn to rap a verse.

Shy Ronnie began with the comedy trio The Lonely Island, made up of Andy Samberg, Akiva Shaffer, and Jorma Taccone, which they formed in 2001. As they struggled to find work after college, the trio became some of the first performers to post their material on the internet. After a few failed pilots, the group finally became hired by SNL in 2005 which led to some of their award-winning shorts like Shy Ronnie and I’m on a Boat.
