Selene is the main protagonist of the Underworld film series and portrayed by British actress Kate Beckinsale. Selene is a vampire and a Death Dealer, an elite group of fighting vampires whose primary duty is to exterminate the werewolves, called the Lycans. She was a former human who, at 19-years-old, became an orphan when werewolves supposedly slaughtered her family. Viktor, one of the vampire elders, adopted her and turned her into a vampire. This transformation made her loyal to Viktor, who saw her as a surrogate daughter. This loyalty to Viktor crumbled when she met Michael Corvin, a Vampire/Lycan hybrid.

She wore a white fur coat after the vampires of the Nordic Coven resurrected her. Her powers were already strong when first transformed into a vampire, given that Viktor sired her. But, Selene eventually became much stronger and more powerful when she consumed Alexander Corvinus’ blood and enhanced by the cocooning ritual of the Nordic Coven.

About Selene

Selene’s relationship with vampire-Lycan hybrid Michael Corvin became a central point in the Underworld movies. The two went into hiding and conceived a child: a daughter, Eve. Years later, when humans were exterminating both vampires and Lycans, Selene had to come out of hiding to protect her daughter and defeat Marius. When out of hiding, she became one of the three vampire elders, along with Lena and David. According to the creators of the movie series, Selene and Michael’s love story originated from Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. It mirrors the story between Greek mythology characters, Selene and Endymion. The former is a goddess who falls in love with the latter, a mere mortal.

Kate Beckinsale’s role as Selene was written precisely for her in mind. Incidentally, she has a relationship with Underworld director Len Wiseman. The child version of Selene was played by Lily Sheen, who was Kate’s daughter from actor Michael Sheen, who also plays Lucian.
