His strong arms, squinty eye, and can of spinach were only the outer appearance—his good-natured spirit is what captured his audience for all those years beginning in 1928.

Popeye the Sailor Man first came into our lives through a comic book called the Thimble Theatre. Popeye has superhuman strength, but he can only achieve that extra strength by eating a can of spinach. The fact that his muscles grew from eating the spinach led to many families using this strategy as a way to get their children to eat their spinach at dinner time!
Popeye fought many enemies while trying to keep his beloved Olive Oyl safe, but he couldn’t do that all the time without the help of his unique super strength. Popeye not only grew muscles, but he grew into one of the most popular cartoon characters of all time. Even to this day, people still reference common phrases Popeye used. Even though Popeye has a rough and tough exterior, he has a gentle soul and kind heart that made it so easy to fall in love with his character!
