Erik falls for Christine, a young soprano who he lured to be his protege by telling her tales about him being the angel of music. However, he expresses his feelings for her in a terrorizing way, manipulating her and using her passion for music just to keep her close. The love interest between Christine and Raoul is the source of conflict of the whole ordeal.
