There’s no worse nightmare to a child than that of an evil clown which even the adults of the area cannot see. Pennywise the Dancing Clown, who appears in the 2017 adaptation of Stephen King’s It, is a supernatural creature who preys upon the children of Derry, Maine every twenty-seven years. Pennywise has special powers such as manipulation and shape-shifting which makes him even more difficult to stop!
In the telling of the novel, It doesn’t just go by the appearance of a clown. It may appear as a bat, werewolf, or whatever happens to be the child’s worst fear. While appearing to be male though the majority of the novel, It shapeshifts into a huge female spider. So, the true nature of It isn’t quite certain. It further explains that he chooses to kill and devour children not by nature, but because children’s fears are easier to interpret in physical form which makes children easier to fill with terror.
