Mantis Costume Tips & FAQs
Check out the Mantis Costume Guide FAQ! In this section, you’ll find all the essential information for dressing up as the empathetic and innocent insect-like character from “Guardians of the Galaxy,” Mantis.
To dress like Mantis, you'll need a green long-sleeve tunic or form-fitting top, matching green pants, and a wide brown or black waist belt. Additionally, you'll need black or brown boots and black gloves. To complete the look, create Mantis's distinct collar using fabric, foam, or cardboard and attach it to your top.
Mantis has a pale green skin tone and distinctive facial features, including large, dark eyes and antennae. You can use water-based body paint or makeup to achieve the skin tone, applying it evenly to your face, neck, and hands. For the eyes, use makeup to create an enlarged, dark appearance. To create Mantis's antennae, use a headband with attached wire or pipe cleaners covered in fabric or painted to match your skin tone.
Mantis has long, straight, dark hair. To replicate her hairstyle, you can use a wig or, if your hair is already long and dark, simply straighten it and part it down the middle.
Mantis is known for her sweet and naive personality, with memorable quotes such as "The crabby puppy is so cute, he makes me want to die!", "I'm hideous?", and "I can't read him while he's awake, but he's so adorable when he sleeps."
To showcase Mantis's empathic abilities, you can create small props or gestures to mimic her power. For example, you could pretend to touch someone's hand and then react to their "emotions," or create small cards with different emotions written on them to "read" people's feelings. Remember to stay in character and maintain Mantis's innocent and curious demeanor while interacting with others.
About Mantis
Mantis was found by Ego when she was still in her larva state, and he took her in as his own child. What Mantis was unaware of and too innocent to notice, was that Ego was using her empath abilities to keep himself calm in his journey to find his son and conquer the galaxy. Mantis stood by his side because she believed that he truly loved her as family, but she began to doubt his intentions when she met the Guardians of the Galaxy.
Mantis and Drax The Destroyer quickly bonded, and Mantis knew she didn’t want any harm to come to the Guardians. She eventually told the group what Ego was planning, and they all banned together to stop him from destroying the galaxy. After accomplishing their goals, Mantis was welcomed as a new member of the Guardians of the Galaxy.
