The now Netflix comedy series, Cobra Kai, fast-forwards 34-years to present day and continues the storyline from Johnny Lawrence’s point of view. Played by William Zabka, Johnny was the antagonist of The Karate Kid as well as Daniel LaRusso’s main rival, originally appearing in The Karate Kid Part II. Lawrence, now in his 50s, is a divorced, alcoholic who recently lost his job. His life take a turn for the better after he accepts a loan from his abusive step-father, Sid Weinberg, enabling him to reopen the Cobra Kai dojo with teenager Miguel Diaz as his first student.

However, Johnny runs into further trouble when he enters the dojo in the All-Valley Under-18 Karate Championships tournament and faces a lifetime ban. He convinces the committee to lift the ban despite Daniel’s disapproval.

Following his success of the All-Valley tournament, Johnny invest even more into his up and coming students Miguel, Eli, and Robby and grow the dojo. The comedy series originally premiering on YouTube was acquired and renewed by Netflix.
