Barbara Maitland Costume Tips & FAQs

Step into the whimsical yet eerie world of Barbara Maitland from the cult classic film “Beetlejuice” with our comprehensive costume guide FAQ. Embrace the charm and quirkiness of this beloved character as we delve into creating a look that captures both her normal life and her transformation in the afterlife.

Barbara Maitland's most iconic outfit is from her ghostly form, which includes a white, long-sleeved, Victorian-style wedding dress with lace and frill details. The dress is characterized by its aged, ghostly appearance, with a tattered and faded look. For her regular appearance, a simple, pastel-colored blouse paired with a skirt reflects her wholesome and down-to-earth style.

To recreate Barbara's ghostly makeup, aim for a pale, almost white face paint to give that ethereal, otherworldly look. Accentuate the eyes with dark eyeshadow and eyeliner to create a sunken-eye effect. Adding subtle veins or aging effects with makeup can enhance the ghostly appearance.

Barbara's hairstyle is a short, curly bob, typically in a light brown or auburn shade. To replicate this, you can style your hair similarly or use a wig that matches the description. The hair should have a natural, soft appearance, in contrast to her ghostly makeup.

A key prop for the ghostly version of Barbara is a handbook for the recently deceased, an iconic element from the film. Additionally, creating exaggerated, oversized facial features like her stretched mouth can be a creative and fun addition to the costume, capturing one of the film's most memorable scenes.

Barbara is known for her gentle, kind-hearted nature and her bewilderment at her ghostly situation. Emphasizing a demeanor of confusion and surprise, mixed with a nurturing personality, will bring depth to your portrayal. Practice her reactions to the bizarre situations she finds herself in, showcasing both her resilience and her caring nature.

About Barbara Maitland

Barbara along with her husband Adam Maitland, from the 1988 movie Beetlejuice directed by Tim Burton, are simple people who would much rather stay home and decorate their immaculate Victorian home instead of going on vacation. When Barabara swerves to avoid a dog on a routine drive home from town, the couple both pass away. They quickly learn they have died and their house is sold to new owners, the Deetz family. The deceased couple, Adam and Barbara, try to scare the new owners out of their house with their newly found shapeshifting abilities to no avail.

Things get interesting when Beetlejuice, played by Michael Keaton, shows up as their consultant to help scare off the Deetz family. The crude and obnoxious “bio-exorcist” doesn’t perform as expected. The hilarity that ensues is great for any time of year, not just Halloween! Beetlejuice is still a well-loved film over 30 years later as it was a huge critical and commercial success. A follow-up animated television series was also produced by Tim Burton.
