The Disney Pixar movie Coco is about a Mexican family who has banished music from the household. One of the youngest, Miguel Rivera, has secretly been learning guitar in hopes of following his dreams of becoming a musician. His Abuelita finds out on the evening of the Day of the Dead and breaks his guitar. He runs away to Ernesto’s mausoleum and finds himself no longer on the side of the living. He has to find a way back before sunrise; otherwise, he’ll be stuck in the land of the dead forever.

Abuelita and Miguel have a strained relationship. The strain is due in part to their different views on music and the effects it may bring on the family. Miguel believes that music should be enjoyed by all, especially if it’s by Ernesto! But, Abuelita sees it much differently. Their family has a history of music ruining relationships. And the perceived effects of music have led to Abuelita becoming overprotective of her family and bitter about music. When Miguel returns from his adventure and plays a song for Mamá Coco, Abuelita remembers the joy music can bring.

Don’t let the fear of the past stop you from embracing the future! Your whole family should join you for Día de Los Muertos. Have characters like Miguel Rivera, Mamá Coco, Mamá Imelda, Héctor, Franco Rivera, and any others from the Coco cast who can join you in your celebration.

About Abuelita

Elena Rivera who is called Abuelita by her family, is the daughter of Coco and Julio. Just like other children from the Rivera family, she learned how to make shoes and continue running the family business. Abuelita discovered that family was the most important thing and that hard work is the key to success. She also learned of her grandfather, who appeared to have left Mamá Imelda to follow his dreams of becoming a musician. This lead to Mamá Imelda’s banishment of music in the family.

Abuelita carries her hatred of music into the newer generations of her family. Through stories and personal experiences, she has seen that music has harmed her family. She feels betrayed when Miguel reveals that he’s been secretly playing music and can’t understand why he disobeyed her. However, he shows her that music can be used to heal people, too, when he helps Mamá Coco revisit her favorite childhood memory.
