First Order StormtrooperStormtrooper, Mandalorian & Magneto
Helmet Costumes
Costume Wall has 84 helmet costume guides, and a helmet is the highest-impact piece in costume because it takes the whole head. A First Order Stormtrooper is white armour with a black visor, the Mandalorian is beskar grey with a T-visor, and Magneto is a maroon helmet over a cape and a plain suit. The rest of this page is organised by what the helmet needs underneath it: the armour, the visor colour, the bodysuit and the prop, with each guide listing the pieces and a photo to copy.

Which Helmet Costume Should I Pick?
The white trooper is the most recognisable, the Mandalorian is the most comfortable to wear all night, and Magneto is the cheapest because the helmet is the only piece to buy.

Make Your Helmet a Costume
Start with the helmet you chose, then add the armour and the layers that make the rest of the character.

Jango FettArmored mercenary in a silver and blue helmet: a bounty hunter costume set, black combat boots and a silver blaster prop.
Buzz LightyearToy space ranger in a bubble space helmet: a classic adult jumpsuit, white costume gloves and adult white sneakers.Build the Armour to Match the Helmet
A trooper armour set: white shoulder bells, a chest plate and black undergear. Mandalorian armour: a grey pauldron and a soft cape. Knight armour: chainmail or a tabard, never glossy plastic. King Leonidas and the Roman Centurion build the same way, a crested headpiece over layered plate. The Viking goes plainer, a tunic and a cloak with the fur left to carry it.
Match the body to the head and buy the shell last. A glossy dome over matte plating looks mismatched in every photo, and a weathered shell wants the same scratches carried down onto the shoulders, from one pot of paint in one session. Check the neck opening, because the collar is the join a stranger notices first.
Decide Whether You Need to See
A solid visor is more accurate, a mesh or tinted eye piece is wearable, so decide before you buy. Mark Watney wears a sealed white dome with a clear bubble over the face, the most forgiving party option. The Rocketeer pairs a brass shell with a narrow slit and asks you to hold still, which is fine until the music starts.
Sealed shells fog and run hot, so plan ventilation and water. A hidden mesh panel, a liftable faceplate or goggles over the eyes keep the silhouette while letting you see. Kick Buttowski takes the cheap route, stunt goggles pushed up on the brow and a white suit underneath, and the look reads as the character with your eyes uncovered.
Get the Undersuit Right
What sits under the shell decides whether the costume reads as a kit or a character. A black compression layer under trooper plating, or a grey flight suit under bounty hunter gear, beats a t-shirt every time. Halo Kitty gets away with padding because the layer below does the same job as the armour above.
Keep the layers plain and dark so the head and the body stay the focus. Daft Punky Brewster hides bright patched-together 1980s clothes under a pair of robot shells, and that clash is deliberate. ASYNC Researcher takes the opposite tack, one sealed yellow hazmat layer with a respirator and a hood, so the character reads before you add a single detail.
Add One Prop and Keep the Rest Simple
One prop finishes a headpiece costume: a blaster for the trooper, a rifle for the bounty hunter, a sword for the knight, a cape for the hero. Soldier (Team Fortress 2) is a shell, olive fatigues and a rocket launcher, and the launcher is what names the character at a glance.
Avoid a second weapon or a backpack unless the character really carries one, because the outline gets busy and stops reading as anyone in particular. Gold Digger leans on glitter and a chain over the plainest possible base, and Doctor Fate needs only a gold helm and an amulet, with everything else kept quiet.
Helmet Costume FAQ
What is the easiest helmet costume?
A stormtrooper. The helmet and armour are sold as a set in most sizes, and the black bodysuit underneath is the only extra piece you need.
Can I wear glasses under a helmet?
Usually not with a solid visor. Choose a helmet with a mesh or liftable face area, or wear contact lenses, if you need to see clearly through the evening.
How do I stop a helmet fogging up?
Use an anti-fog spray on the visor and leave a gap at the neck, because most fogging comes from trapped warm air rather than the visor itself.
What should I wear under a helmet and armour?
A plain black bodysuit or compression layer for trooper looks, and a grey or brown flight suit for bounty hunter looks. Keep the layers dark so the helmet stays the focus.
Which helmet costume works for a group?
The trooper works for a group because everyone wears the same armour and each person only needs their own helmet and bodysuit.

Choose Your Helmet Costume
Buy the helmet first, match the armour to its finish, then close the gaps with a dark bodysuit, gloves and a neck seal. One prop is enough, and the cape-and-helmet characters are the ones that read from across a room on the smallest budget.
