How to Put Together a Gun Costume
Start with a toy pistol or foam revolver you already own, then let the holster, the belt and the character pick the rest.
Wyatt EarpWhite Victorian shirt, black vest, cowboy hat, badge and a holster set.
John MatrixBlack ranger vest, paratrooper fatigues, face paint and a thigh holster.
Boba FettGreen-and-yellow helmet, weathered armor, jetpack, blaster and cape.Pick the Prop Before the Outfit
A gun costume lives or dies on the prop in the hand, so choose that first and build the clothes around it. John Wick wants a black toy pistol with a screw-on silencer, because the long barrel is the shape people recognize. Lara Croft reads best with two matching prop pistols in belt or thigh holsters, since the twin draw is her whole pose. Rick Grimes carries a foam revolver in a leather gun belt that suits a uniform shirt, a cowboy hat and a badge.
Once the prop is set, the rest of the outfit falls into place around it. Sadie Adler wants a lever-action toy rifle on a belt holster, and the Lone Ranger carries a gunman belt under a tailored blazer so the look stays formal. Boba Fett trades the handgun for a blaster and a jetpack, which pushes the build toward armor. A borrowed black suit serves John Wick, Agent 47 and the Men In Black, and the pistol decides which one you are.
Rig the Holster So It Holds
The holster is what keeps a costume gun in the right place all night, so match it to the character. Leon S. Kennedy wears a shoulder holster under a brown jacket, which hides the pistol until he reaches for it. John Matrix straps a thigh holster over paratrooper fatigues for a commando read, while Rosa Diaz keeps a belt holster and a badge for a plainclothes detective. Carl Grimes runs two holsters for a young survivor look, and Revy carries shoulder holsters and twin prop pistols.
A gun belt does the same job on western builds, and it carries spare weight you would otherwise hide in a pocket. Wyatt Earp, Doc Holliday and Sadie Adler all hang a leather belt and holster off a plain shirt and vest, so the outfit reads as a gunslinger before anyone looks at the prop. On sci-fi characters the holster becomes a prop in itself: Grand Admiral Thrawn clips one to a white uniform, and Deadpool and Lady Deadpool bolt thigh straps onto a red suit.
Match the Gun to the Era
The prop should belong to the same decade as the clothes, or the whole costume looks borrowed. Western gunslingers such as Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday use a single-action toy revolver and a tooled leather rig, and Django Freeman adds a leather holster to a trucker jacket. Mid-century spies want something small and hidden: James Bond carries a Walther prop, and John Watson tucks a rubber pistol into an army-doctor outfit. Modern and near-future characters carry the biggest props of all, so let the era set the shape.
That rules out a plastic ray gun on a cowboy or a chrome revolver on a tactician. Officer K carries a futuristic blaster with a shearling coat, the Winter Soldier mounts a rifle on a black bodysuit, and Star-Lord pairs a prop blaster with a flight helmet. If you own only one toy pistol, choose a plain black or silver shape, because it slips into a spy, detective or hitman costume far more easily than a neon ray gun does.
Build It From Clothes You Own
Most gun costumes need one prop and a little tailoring, not a full kit. Start with a dark suit or a plain shirt you already have, then add the prop and the belt. Agent 47 is a black suit, a white shirt and a red tie once the gloves and a passable barcode tattoo go on. John Wick is the same suit with a five-button vest and a black tie. Rick Grimes takes a two-tone uniform shirt and a cowboy hat, and the gun belt does the rest.
Shop the small parts before the big ones, because a holster, a belt and a toy gun are cheap and they carry the whole costume. Mad Max needs a toy handgun and a shotgun along a wasteland outfit, and Rambo wants a toy knife and gun belt over tactical pants. If the clothes are already close, the prop is the only thing a viewer notices, so spend there first and leave the store-bought kit for last.
Gun Costume FAQ
What is the easiest gun costume to put together?
Do I need a realistic gun for a costume?
No. Toy and foam replicas are the standard for costume use, and they are lighter and safer to carry all night. A black or silver toy pistol covers spies and hitmen, a foam revolver covers western builds, and a plastic blaster covers sci-fi characters such as Boba Fett and Star-Lord.
What is the best holster for a costume gun?
Match the holster to the character. A shoulder holster suits Leon S. Kennedy and other jacket-wearing agents, a thigh holster suits John Matrix and other commandos, and a leather gun belt suits Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday. A plain belt holster covers detectives such as Rosa Diaz.
Which western costumes work with a toy revolver?
A toy single-action revolver fits most of them. Wyatt Earp, Doc Holliday, Django Freeman and Sadie Adler all wear a leather belt and holster, so the revolver sits where it should. Add a vest, a cravat and a cowboy hat and the outfit reads as a gunslinger before anyone looks at the prop.
How do I build a sci-fi blaster costume?
Give the character armor and a large prop. Boba Fett pairs a blaster with a Mandalorian helmet and a jetpack, the Winter Soldier mounts a rifle on a black bodysuit, and Star-Lord adds a flight helmet to a padded jacket. The bigger the prop, the more the outfit reads as science fiction.
Can I make a gun costume without buying a kit?
Yes. Most of these builds are clothes plus one prop. Agent 47 and John Wick are both suits you can borrow, and Rick Grimes is a uniform shirt with a cowboy hat and a gun belt. Buy the holster, the belt and the toy gun, and skip the packaged kit.

Choose Your Gun Costume
Choose John Wick for a suit-and-tie hitman, Lara Croft for a double-holster adventure build, or Sheriff Rick Grimes for a western-flavored lawman. Wyatt Earp, Boba Fett and Sadie Adler show how far the same toy pistol or foam revolver stretches once the clothes and the era change around it.
