Make Your Backpack a Costume
Start with the pack that belongs to the character, then build the clothes around it.
Dora the ExplorerA pink tee, orange shorts and the rescue backpack
Finn the HumanA green character pack, a white hat and mesh shorts
RussellA yellow shirt, a badge sash and an orange camping packMatch the Pack to the Character’s World
A bright character pack suits a cartoon explorer, a sporty branded bag belongs with a Pokémon trainer, and a canvas hiking pack fits a survivor. Compare shape and scale as well as colour, because a small school bag and a tall tactical rucksack create very different silhouettes.
School characters carry ordinary book bags, so Greg Heffley and Nick Birch need nothing more exotic than a plain pack. Mark Zuckerberg’s dorm-room look, Elliot Alderson’s hoodie and the Among Us crewmate each read from a few specific details rather than the bag alone.
Fit the Pack Over the Finished Layers
Adjust both straps after the jacket, hoodie or costume top is on. Keep them clear of wigs, collars and shoulder details, and check the back view so the pack does not hide a patch or a printed design that the character needs on the back of the costume.
Bulky layers change strap length. Bilbo Baggins’ cloak, Tyreese’s heavy jacket and the padded suit on TF2 Pyro all sit differently once a pack is added, so test the finished look in a mirror with the pack on and shorten the straps if they slide.
Keep the Load Light
Use the backpack as a wearable costume cue and as practical storage, but avoid filling it with heavy props. Soft, lightweight items preserve the shape, and a light pack stays comfortable through a long evening of walking between parties and posing for photographs.
Some characters carry specific provisions. Ellie and Joel cross the country with scavenged supplies, Tess keeps a lighter load for a shorter trip, and Henry and Sam travel as a pair. Keep the weight low, the zip closed and the shoulder straps flat.
Build a Group or Family Look
Group costumes work when the packs are distinct. The Stranger Things friends carry different school bags, so Dustin Henderson, Mike Wheeler and Lucas Sinclair each stay recognisable, and Glenn Rhee adds a different silhouette again.
For a family or a pair, vary the pack size as well as the colour. A small character bag for a child beside a full hiking pack for an adult reads as one group, and a Fortnite set keeps a bright matching palette across everybody, from the outfit down to the bag.
Backpack Costume FAQ
What characters are known for carrying backpacks?
Dora the Explorer, Finn the Human, Misty, Ash Ketchum, Pokémon GO trainers, Russell, Riley, Ellie and several Stranger Things and survival-game characters carry backpacks in their selected guides.
What is an easy costume to make with a backpack?
Does the backpack color need to match exactly?
Prioritize the colors and silhouette people notice. Dora’s purple pack, Misty’s red pack and Finn’s green rounded pack are strong cues. For realistic survivor costumes, size, fabric and weathered styling may matter more than an exact shade.
Can I use a backpack I already own?
Yes, when its shape and color fit the character. Add only removable, non-damaging details such as a patch, ribbon or attached plush if the selected guide supports them, and remove everyday branding when practical.
How do I wear a backpack over a costume?
Put on every clothing layer before setting the straps. Check shoulder movement, keep buckles away from wigs and collars, and make sure the bag does not cover the costume’s most recognizable back detail.
Which backpack costumes work for a group?
Pokémon trainers can coordinate team colors and packs, The Last of Us characters can use distinct survivor clothing, and Stranger Things characters can pair period school bags with separate outfits. Keep each guide’s own clothing cues visible.

Choose Your Backpack Costume
Start with the backpack’s purpose—school, exploration, survival or game gear—then match its color and shape. Once the surrounding shirt, jacket, hat or uniform is right, the bag can serve as both a useful costume piece and a clear character cue.
